When it comes to removing and replacing VELUX windows and blinds, it is important to know the process. We have put together a quick blog with key tips that you should know.

Removing VELUX Windows

The key here is to use a ladder or step stool that can be used on both sides of your window frame. If you are using an extension pole for this job, make sure it has been designed specifically for this purpose. The main reason why we recommend not having any tools in hand while working on your roof is because if something goes wrong, there will be no way out! It’s like climbing up a mountain without rope or proper equipment.

The first thing you want to do when you remove your old VELUX window is to get rid of all those nails which have penetrated through into the woodwork. For safety purposes, always wear protective gloves while doing these types of jobs. This ensures that you won't cut your hands open accidentally during the removal procedure.

Once you've removed the old VELUX window from its mounting brackets, you'll notice how easy it was to pull them off. Now, you need to carefully peel away the rubber sealant underneath the wooden frames. By gently peeling it back, you should be able to access the screws holding the glass panes together. Once they're unscrewed, simply push the pane down towards the floor. Since most VELUX windows come with double-glazed panels, you may find that it takes two people to lift the panel upwards since one person cannot hold the weight alone. Make sure that you protect your face and body from falling debris while lifting the panels. Also remember to keep the edges clean – dirt gets stuck between the metal frames and thus makes it difficult to screw the new ones into place.

Replacing VELUX Windows

To install the new VELUX window shutters properly, follow the steps below:

1) First, measure where the bolts go into the wall. Then mark the positions for the holes in the base plates. Remember that the measurements must include 1/4 inch. Use a drill bit with a diameter slightly larger than the bolt size to ensure that the hole is drilled correctly.

2) Next, attach the bracket to the bottom of the door sill plate. Attach each side separately until secure. Do note that the distance between the top edge of the door sill plate and the uppermost end of the shutter should be equal to half of the width of the shutter itself. Make sure that the top corners of the bracket align perfectly onto the marks made previously. Drill and countersink pilot holes on each corner prior to installing the bracket.

3) Install the adjustable shims under the bracket.

4) Screw the bracket securely onto the door sill plate.

5) Measure again to determine whether the distances match the previous measurement.

6) Repeat steps 1 to 5 until you reach Step 3 once more.

7) Turn over the unit upside down and adjust the position of the slats accordingly.

8) Securely tighten the screws.

9) Position the window blinds according to the instructions provided on the packaging.

10) Adjust the height of the slats by turning the knobs at their ends.

11) Tighten up the screws tightly.

12) Test out if everything works fine or not before leaving.

Replacing VELUX Blinds

Replacing VELUX blinds is just about as simple as installing them initially. All you require is to follow the same steps outlined above. However, you might consider purchasing a tool kit especially made for this type of work. A few other helpful tips include:

1) Use a wet cloth to wipe down each side of the track system where the blinds hang. This helps ensure that dust does not accumulate over time.

2) Cleaning the tracks every now and again prevents the slats from becoming dirty. They need regular cleaning to prevent mould growth.

3) Be careful when putting the new VELUX blinds around the corner. Most often than not, you'd see a gap left behind after inserting the last piece of trim. Therefore, try to put the corners flush against the wall.

4) When replacing standard roller blinds, it's better to measure the width of the opening rather than relying solely upon visual cues.

5) Take note of the colour codes printed on the bottom edge of the blinds. These colours help identify different parts of the structure including the top rail, lower rails and the bottom rail.

6) Finally, check the manufacturer's instructions for specific guidance regarding installation.
