VELUX Blind Guide

Posted by Lawrie Fraser on 16th May 2024

VELUX blinds are as simple as they are stylish. With many benefits such as extra privacy from neighbours, and extra comfort in blocking early morning sunrises and glaring lap-post reflections. However, it is not every day you have to purchase these blinds and to the standard homeowner, information is not always clear. So, here is our 360 guide on VELUX roof window blinds.

What & Who Are VELUX?

VELUX are the world leaders in roof window & skylight manufacturing. Founded in Denmark well over 80 years ago,  VELUX have continued making great strides towards innovation and completing the impossible of on roof fenestration. VELUX mainly manufacture sloping roof windows for roof pitches between 0-15 degrees. However, they also specialise in flat roof solutions and roof window accessories.

Should I Buy VELUX Blinds?

Always! VELUX blinds are made exactly to the code on your roof window, ensuring a perfect, flush fit. VELUX blinds can sometimes cost slightly more than budget knock-offs, but you are secured with a quality product with 10-year warranty for peace of mind.

Are VELUX Blinds Easy To Install?

VELUX blinds are super easy to install! You may think you are reading advice from an installer here. But, the truth is, I am behind this screen working in an office 9-5. Trying to install VELUX blinds for me was an easy experience. I have experienced more fuss with IKEA flat pack furniture. So, unless you are limited by height, ability, or time don't make too much fuss about finding an installer. You literally just pick, and then click.

What Blind Do I Need For My VELUX Window?

Choosing the correct VELUX blind could not be easier. You should find the code on your roof window (on the ledge that becomes exposed when you open the window) then match this code up to your blind.

For example a GGL MK04 window, you should choose a DKL MK04 1025SWL blind.

For older windows like GGL -1, these move to a newer generation blind. However, they still fit perfectly.

Will VELUX Electric & Solar Blinds Work With My Window?

Yes, there is options for any window you may have. However, there is some limitations you should ensure you smooth over before purchasing your blind.

VELUX electric windows are compatible with all VELUX blind models. However, I recommend purchasing the VELUX electric blind. This blind plugs into the same motor on your roof window to operate your blind and window from the one power supply.

VELUX solar windows are compatible with solar or manual VELUX blinds. It is important to note the VELUX electric blind is not compatible with the windows solar panel and therefore cannot be cannot be operated.

VELUX manual windows are compatible with manual or solar VELUX blinds. The VELUX solar blind has it's own solar panel on the trims of the blind. Ensuring clean power and a visually pleasing hidden solar panel.

What VELUX Blind Should I Purchase?

This is your decision. However, here is a short breakdown on each VELUX blind. Personally, my favourite is the solar blackout blind!

Blackout blinds: These blinds are a great option to block out early morning sunrises in your home helping better & restful sleep.

Roller blinds: These are the most common type of VELUX roof window blind. They are easy to operate and can be adjusted to let in as much or as little light as desired.

Pleated blinds: These blinds are made from pleated fabric and offer a more luxurious look than roller blinds. They are also more effective at blocking out light.

Venetian blinds: These blinds are made from horizontal slats that can be adjusted to let in different amounts of light. They are a good choice for rooms where you want to be able to control the amount of light and privacy.
